An Investigation of Teacher Candidates’ Knowledge Levels of “Point, Line, Plane and Angle” Concepts and Misconceptions
Abstract :
This study aims to investigate perceptions and misconceptions of classroom teacher candidates and teacher candidates that are taking teaching certificate in Mathematics on “point, line, plane and angle” concepts which will have an important role in teaching in primary level. The study was conducted through descriptive survey model. The participants of the study are 85 senior teacher candidates studying in a state university, Faculty of Education,Department of Primary Classroom Teaching and 112 mathematics teacher candidates that are taking teaching certificates in the same institution. “Geometry Basic Concepts Test” (CBCT) that was developed by the researchers was used as data collection tool.Based on the findings, perceptions of senior primary classroom teacher candidates and mathematics teacher candidates were revealed in that whether there were statistically significant differences in terms of their scores and gender. Additionally, teacher candidates’ misconceptions regarding “point, line, plane and angle” concepts were also indicated. As a result of the data analysis, it was revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between mathematics and primary classroom teacher candidates’ scores of CBCT on behalf of the mathematics teacher candidates. Additionally, it was suggested that there should be more classes on geometry for teacher candidates during their bachelor degree.
