Abstract :
Emerging social or economic reasons, weekly markets have multi-functional activities. Marketpalces may be also used as multi-purpose spaces. Cheapness, employment, social interaction are some of these functions. Weekly markets facilitate urban life, but, due to some reasons may negatively effect the same life. In this study, on the basis of three weekly markets, markets problems and attractions in Balıkesir city are surveyed. The date obtained from questioneres were analyzed by using SPSS 15.0 program. Information belonging four different groups (sellers, customers, traders with nearby shop and houshold living near to markets) is statistically calculated by percentage taking technique. Having similar features with other studies in general, Balikesir markets offer special results to be considered in urban planning: The most problematic market places is Bahcelievler Cumartesi Pazarı. With positive implications, 52 Evler and Salıpazarı have different meanings to those surveyed. This situation shows that one shouldconsider the features of both market places in the future planning stages.
