Abstract :
In the study, Gercanis and Kururcay are administrative units under the statues of subprovince and borough until the late Ottoman period. The region studied for demographic and residential properties in the 17th century is situated in the borders of Erzincan and Erzurum. Gercanis and Kururcay covering southwestern part of eastern Blacksea region, apart from the West of Eastern Anatolia, constitute today s Refahiye, Ilic (Erzincan) and some parts of Imranlh (Sivas). This region is made up of rough lands on South ranges of North Anatolian Mountains in the North of Karasu River. The name of Gercanis, centre of subprovince in 1872, was changed and moved to the present place of Refahiye. In addition, Kururcay, as subprovince, lost its administrative status after Ilic became subprovince. In the administrative constitution of the region, various changes have been experienced from Ottoman period onward. This situation is related to certain politacal, social and economical transformations as well as residential positions at regional and national scale. Most of the settlements determined in Ottoman period have survived up today, whereas some have not been determined. In Republic Period, the fact that the names of some settlements were changed is noted as another sort of transformation. In the study, the administrative status, demographic and residential properties of Gercanis and Kururcay is studied from point of view of historical geography.
