Abstract :

In this study, 50-year period between 1950 and 2010 in Van province, is aimed to investigate the changes of rural-urban population ratio. The period of rapid urbanization in our country started after 1960, using data from TÜİK Van was examined. Factors affecting the exchange rate of rural-urban population of the province with the population characteristics were also analyzed. In all periods of Van counting rate of urban population were below the average in Turkey. Fifty- year period at the beginning of urbanization of the province, while further back than the average for the period by 10% to 25%, this difference was at the end. Fifty-year period despite the constantly increasing rate of urbanization in the provinces of Van province with the national average urbanization rate of urbanization in the province because of the difference between the rate of increase is slower than the country s average. Van at the beginning of the period of 1960- 2010, which was around 20% of urban population ratio rose to 51% at the end of the period. Approximately a 30% reduction in the rate of rural population in the same period and this rate was decreased to 49%. Approximately 5 times the total population of the province fifty-year period, the city population has increased 3 times to 25 times the population of the village. The city of Van very quickly in this period the population has increased by approximately 22 thousand to 360 thousand. In other words, the city of Van increased by 1536% of the population. At the beginning of the period of 50 years make up only 10% of total population of the city of Van province by the year 2010 is formed by about 36% of the total population. The results of counting the period of 1960-2010 is analyzed important changes have occurred in the province s population are rural-urban distribution.
