Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to adapt the Brief Adolescents’ Subjective Well-Being in School Scale (BASWBSS) into Turkish and examine its psychometric properties. The study was conducted with the participation of 336 students enrolled in 5-8th grades during 2014-2015 academic year. The sample was composed of 182 (54.2 %) female and 154 (45.8 %) male students. Participants’ ages ranged between 10 and 15 (X= 12.36, sd= 1.11). To investigate construct validity of Brief Adolescents’ Subjective Well-Being in School Scale, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed. To examine concurrent/criterion-related validity of the scale adapted into Turkish, The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, The Satisfaction With Life Scale, School Attachment Scale for Children and Adolescents were used. In the reliability study, internal consistency coefficients and test-retest reliability were calculated. Research results indicated that two-factor original structure of the scale was confirmed on the target sample. Moderately significant correlations were found between target scale and criterion-related measures. In the reliability study, internal consistency coefficients were determined to be .93 for School Satisfaction subscale, .57 for Affect in School subscale, and .87 for total scale. Test-retest reliability was computed to be .59, .62, and .73 for School Satisfaction subscale, Affect in School subscale, and total scale, respectively. As a result, all these findings indicated that Brief Adolescents’ Subjective Well-Being in School Scale can be used as a valid and reliable measuring instrument by researchers and practitioners in our country.
