Abstract :
This study focuses upon the education system of Sparta, an ancient Greek city-state. The purpose of this study employing the document analysis method is to present a sample from antiquity to emphasize the importance of education in the structuring, progress and also in the annihilation of societies. Sparta was the first state in history to take education under the control of the state and to attempt to educate a new generation. Sparta gave its citizens equal and compulsory, regimented education, it didn’t leave education up to individual choice, as in the other Greek city-states. From the ancient sources and a few surviving inscriptions concerning this subject, its clear that the education system of Sparta was quite hard and was also a system that ignored human psychology and individuality. As the first to realize the importance of education for society and the state, Sparta’s purpose was construct a society of patriotic and obedient individuals. Sparta succeeded in realizing that ambition but was unable to develop creativity and to contribute to areas of Greek civilization such as: philosophy, art, literature, science and it also couldn’t reach complete military success. Was the reason of this failure due to neglecting philosophy, art, literaure, science, neglecting the creative thinking which makes a human being, human? In examining the Spartan education system an attempt is made to provide an answer to this question.
