The importance of dental assessment for identification
Abstract :
Identification is one of the most important subject in Forensic Sciences. The determination of features that recognize a living person or a corpse from others is called identification. It can be done by examination of body, a tissue of body or signs. The identification is primary importance in cases the deceased person is decomposed irrecognizable, burned or dismembered. Especially dental identification assumes an important role in the identification of corpse when postmortem changes have occured. Because the principal feature of dental evidence is that it is often preserved after death. Each dentist has a responsibility to know the forensic issues associated with his or her profession. Evaluation in the forensic field requires asist to legal authorities, collection and maintain legible and legally acceptable dental records in the identification of victims and suspects. Because comparison of antemortem records and postmortem dental findings, is one of the most effective, easy and accurate method to identify a corpse. In this article methods of dental identification and the importance of dental assessment in Forensic Medicine is presented.
