THE POSITION OF TURKEY WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES IN TERMS OF DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS: A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract
Relative development of Turkey in comparison with the European Union (EU) is explored by using socio-economic indicators which can be classified under eight major groups as labour market, economy, education, industry-trade-services, social protection, health, population and demography, agriculture, research-development (R and D) and technology. By using 57 indicators under these main groups cluster analyses was used. Relative development of Turkey in comparison with the EU were examined through socio-economic indicators for the years 2003 and 2014. The hypothesis of the study is determined as ‘‘Turkey has similar socio-economic performance with the countries, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia who joined the EU recently. As a results of the analysis applied for 2003 and 2014, it is observed that Turkey didn’t share the same development level with any of the EU countries.
