AN EXAMINATION OF THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEENATTACHMENT TO PARENT AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT OFELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to examine whether attachment to parents of elementary school students (at6th, 7th and 8th grade) predict their career development or not. In addition, the purpose of this study is toexamine career development of elementary school students according to perceived academicachievement, grade level, education levels of mother and father. The study group consisted of 199 (104female and 95 male) students from 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in elementary schools. AdolescentDecision Making Questionnaire, Childhood Career Development Scale and Personal Information Formare used to collect data. Simultaneous Multiple Regression Analysis, t test and one way ANOVA are usedto analyze data. The attachment to mother and father scales scores and gender together accounted for asignificant proportion of the variance (% 13) of the career development scores. The attachment to motherand gender (for girls) is powerful predictors of the career development. There are significantlydifferences in career development scores of the students according to the grade level, the education levelsof mother and father, and perceived academic achievement. Results for career guidance and counsellingand future studies are discussed.
