A LINGUISTIC STUDY ON PERSON NAMES (AN EXAMPLE OF AGRI PROVINCE)

The using of person name has an important function in terms of persons, society and public administration. Names gain an identity to individuals, protect the culture of society; and serve public administration in maintaining relationship with individuals. The purpose of this study is to determine etymologically similarities and differences between the most commonly used person names in the province of Agri and across the country; is to analyze them in terms of linguistic characteristics. The study is a descriptive study based on screening model. Data were collected through document review. In the study, 255 names have been totally examined, including most commonly used 51 boys and 70 girls name in Turkey, and 66 boys and 68 girls name mostly used in the province center of Agri. It can be said that there is a great similarity between the names used in Agri province and the most preferred names in Turkey, but context of political movements in recent years, some differences have begun to appear due to emerging belonging to ethnic.
