Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Awareness of High-School Students
Abstract :
The aim of this study is to explore nanoscience and nanotechnology (NST) awareness of students from various school types in Turkey. Case study, one of the qualitative research techniques, was used in the study to collect data. “Embedded single-case design” was used as a case study design in the study. The participants were formed of 50 students (26 girls, 24 boys), coming from different high schools in Istanbul. “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Structured Interview Protocol” has been used for collecting data. Views of the participants were recorded and for the analysis of qualitative data, descriptive analysis has been applied. In results of the study, it is considered that NST education will be beneficial for areas that the students want to work in the future. Media is the most effective means where the students hear about nanotechnology. As a result of the interviews conducted, students interest in, eagerness to learn and awareness for nanotechnology are revealed. Despite this fact, the rate of those who have not heard about any news about up-to-date researches is still relatively high. It appears that nanotechnology-based topics are not recognized in depth. It is observed that students have awareness on nanotechnology s risks and benefits. Some suggestions were offered to increase the NST awareness of students.
