Abstract :

İsmâil Safâ is mostly considered in Servet-i Fünûn literature and named as one of Servet-i Fünûn poets. In fact, he is neither the successor of ancient poetry nor the imitator of the new poetry. His thoughts in his criticism books and applications in his poetry books have both classical poetry traditions and new poetry characteristics which complement each other. In this respect, he emerges as a poet that can be appreciated among the group known as moderates who bear traces from both sides’ conception of art in their works and thoughts. In this study, we have tried to present İsmâil Safâ’s poetry conception through his poems and criticism books. Furthermore, the attitude of İsmâil Safâ between classical poetry tradition and Servet-i Fünûn poetry has been tried to be identified. As a result, it has been realized that, together with being closer to new poetry conception, because of his close friendships with ancient poetry representatives and the education he had received, he has not been far-off the poetry conception of ottoman poets.
