  • Abstract
The sociology of childhood and the concept of childhood are among the neglected areas in Turkish social sciences. We aim to discuss the concept of childhood from different theoretical perspectives. No doubt that the concept of childhood cannot be separated from social change. Consequently, childhood examined in historical perspective. Neoliberal economic structures have contributed to the industrialization of children s culture, games and toys. Today, the concept of childhood needs to be reexamined in the context of globalization. Children worldwide are increasingly targeted as consumers by transnational companies’ marketing strategies. Under this neoliberal model, children are socialized as consumers at increasing rates, and are becoming the objects of commodification and reification. In conclusion, there is a need for an anti-globalization movement to stop the harm caused by neoliberal policies and globalization.
