Abstract :
The sound made from a reed, the ney, a woodwind musical instrument, has almost become the symbol of Sufi music worldwide. The ney has engaged the imagination of poets and became an indispensable element in the allusions drawn in their poetry. This instrument employed in several arts, has been the subject of mention in the works of Mevlevi poets, with the imagery of the reed, the material it is made from, the story of the separation of the individual reed from its fellows in the reed-bed, it being blown and the haunting sound it produces, engaging the mind in the world of metaphor and symbol. The ney has become particularly associated with the Mevlevi, as the Mesnevi itself begins with the story of the ney. Ten Mevlevi poets have been selected within the scope of this study regarding their place within the order and their importance in the 17th century. Amongst the chosen divans, those couplets that include the ney were identified and translated into contemporary Turkish prose and classified under certain headings. These poets’ notable examples are placed under the respective titles of couplets. In order to be more intelligible today, from a variety of sources some brief information concerning the reed is provided in the introduction. With these selected couplets, the attempt was made to explain the ney through the thoughts about it expressed in words by these 17th century Mevlevi poets.
