Abstract :
Famagusta, the last taken city in Cyprus by the Turks in 1571, served as a military fortress and naval base to the Ottoman State. After the conquest it was restored and placed many corps as azeb, artilleryman and armorer. The first most important attack on Famagusta, which also had a strategic importance for the defense of Cyprus, was organized by an allied Christian fleet under the leadership of Tuscany in 1607. In this article, after being given an undetailed process of the whole expedition as a part of Eastern Mediterranean policy of Ferdinand I, I will explore military, administrative and socio-economic conditions of the island during this period. Particularly, the Famagusta attack of Tuscan navy will be investigated in the lights of Ottoman archival by comparing with the European sources. Finally, I will put emphasis on some results of unsuccessful assault and what measures was taken against any possible similar attack on Famagusta.
