Comparison of producer properties, greenhouse structures and vegetable production techniques in modern and conventional greenhouse enterprises in Serik
Abstract :
In this study aiming to compare modern and conventional greenhouses vegetable entrepreneurs, a survey was conducted during summer period of 2007 with the modern greenhouse enterprises and also with the farmers who are dealing with conventional production in the villages of Antalya/Serik (namely Serik center, Aşağı Çatma, Karadayı, Eminceler, Burmancı and Çandır). Modern and conventional production systems were compared through data collected via questionnaires about the enterprise and producers, greenhouse structures, production and marketing. Conventional ones showed similar properties as in the other small scale family enterprises. 90% of producers were primary school graduate and all greenhouses were covered with PE and iron construction was used. Insect net was not used in the greenhouses which had side ventilation. Heating was done only against frost damage resulting in short crop cycle with tomato or cucumber. Production is realized without any soil analyses for nutrition and with the use of excessive synthetic chemicals. In modern greenhouses, the owners are generally university graduate and they use high technology in their greenhouses. In those climate controlled greenhouses production is realized by environmentally friendly production systems soilless technique is being applied.
