Researches on the phenological and pomological characteristics of some Mahaleb (Prunus mahaleb L.) genotypes
Abstract :
Mahaleb (Prunus mahaleb L.), is a cherry rootstock also known as “mahlep” and is very commonly used for cherry cultivation. Turkey which is in the natural range of mahaleb types, possesses a very rich and wide genetic variation in its mahaleb population. In this study, genotypes selected from different regions of Turkey were analyzed and classified. Mahaleb genotypes differ according to the color of their fruit; red and shades of red- are called dark mahaleb, yellow and shades of yellow are described as yellow mahaleb. While fruit weights of genotypes were averages of 14.09 g per 25 fruits and seed weights were 2.75 g per 25 seeds. Vegetative buds were able to break before flower buds all mahaleb genotypesexaminated, therefore leafing preceded flowering. However, growth of leaves through blooming of dormant buds were very slow and fell behind the flowering. Growth of flower buds was very rapid and flowering was dominant. Full flowering of mahaleb genotypes varied between 2-7 days and was determined to be an average of 5 days. As a result genotypes selected from different regions of Turkey were classified through phenological and pomological observations. Their differences revealed a variation among genotypes.
