Abstract :
The surveys were conducted to determine the presence and prevalence of the viruses infecting cold-season vegetable crops including globe artichoke, leek, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, onion, broccoli and Brussels sprouts in the production areas of Izmir province and its around between the years 2010 and 2011. During the surveys, the common viral symptoms were the reduction in overall plant growth, yellowing, mosaics, mottling, leaf distortion, leaf crinkling, spots or streaks on leaves and stem, and leaf and fruit formation disorders. To identify viral agents, a total of 218 samples were randomly collected from symptomatic and asymptomatic plants and were subjected to biological, serological and molecular tests. The results showed that the overall incidence of virus infection was 38.1 % in the tested samples. Cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV) was the most prevalent virus in the samples of our work, followed by Radish mosaic mosaic comovirus (RaMV), Lettuce mosaic potyvirus (LMV), Turnip mosaic potyvirus (TuMV), Leek yellow stripe potyvirus (LYSV) and Artichoke latent potyvirus (ArLV). The highest rates of virus infection among occurred in cauliflower, lettuce, onion and they were followed by Brussel sprout, cabbage, artichoke and leek. In addition, mixed infections caused by more than one viral agent were found in some specimens from plants of cauliflower, lettuce and onion at the rates ranging between 0.5 % and 27.5 %. To our knowledge, the some findings in the present study are the first report of natural infections of artichoke by ArLV and cabbage by CMV in Turkey.
