Abstract :
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine secondary traumatic stress, burnout and compassion satisfaction which form the professional life quality of nurses and the affecting factors.Materials and methods:This study was a descriptive study. 218 nurses working in a public hospital were included in the study. In the study, “Personal Information Form” and “Professional Quality of Life Scale” were implemented to the nurses. In the data analysis t-test, One-Way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA were used for the comparison of dependent-independent variables. A Bonferroni correction t test was used while determining the difference of meaningful analysis of variance.Results: Differences between age, sex, marital status, education level, the weekly working time and the nutritional status and quality of life of nurses participating in the study were not significant (p 0.05). Compassion satisfaction was the highest in the operating rooms and the lowest in the intensive care units; burnout was the highest in the emergency units and the lowest in the intensive care units; secondary traumatic stress was the highest in the emergency rooms and the lowest in the internal units, however, according to the working units the results weren’t statistically significant. Differences between burnout and years in the profession, to have healthy diet and compassion satisfaction, weekly exercise duration and compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue were statistically significant (p 0.05).Conclusion: Encouraging healthy eating and exercise for nurses and training, counselling and support programs to improve quality of life and to prevent burnout and secondary traumatic stress were recommended.
