Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of Mersin University Physical Education and Sports Department Entrance Examination applicants toward teaching profession. Five hundred and ninety nine students participated in the study, with 199 females ( Ẋage= 19.56±1.71) and 407 males (Ẋ age= 20.05±1.92). The Attitudes toward Teaching Profession Scale, having been developed by Erkuş, Sanlı, Bağlı and Güven (2000) for measuring the attitudes of individuals toward teaching profession, was used for data collection. The results of independent samples t-test indicated that statistically no significant difference existed between female and male applicants` attitudes toward teaching profession, p .05. On the average, female ( = 4.66) and male applicants ( = 4.59) equally scored above 3, and their attitudes toward teaching profession were positive. Furthermore, the Pearson correlation coefficient was conducted to explore the relationship between applicants` age and University Entrance Examination -UEE scores and their attitudes towards teaching profession. Results of the analysis showed statistically no significant correlation between applicants` age and attitudes toward teaching profession (r= .06, n= 599, p .05); and between applicants` UEE scores and their attitudes toward teaching profession (r= -.003, n= 599, p .05).
