Cryosurgery, an effective method of tissue destruction by freezing, has been widely used to treat various lesions. Cryosurgery is preferred due to its simple application, high cure rates and good cosmetic results. Requirement of special equipment is disadvantage of this technique. In this review, an overall information is given about the indications of cryosurgery in oral surgery and its advantages, disadvantages and complications along with the selection of patients considering the effects of extreme cold to the tissues. By development of new techniques that monitor the freezing temperature and by use of new cryogens, it is thought that cryosurgery will be used widely in the future in different disciplines of medicine.
