Abstract :
Objective: Supernumerary tooth is a term describing developmental disturbance occuring during osteogenesis resulting in the formation of teeth in excess of the normal number. Supernumerary tooth may occur in deciduous and permanent dentition, but are more frequently seen in latter. The supernumerary tooth may be erupted or unerupted and single or multiple. The aim of the present study is to describe the diagnosis, classification and management of the supernumerary teeth (ST) in a population of Turkish patients. Material and Method: This study was carried out of all non-syndromic patients with ST attended at the Military Hospital, Diyarbakir, and Gulhane Military Medical Academy, Ankara, Turkey, between 2004 and 2008. Diagnosis of ST was based on clinical and radiographic examination. Age, gender, distribution, morphology, eruption, location, position, relation with adjacent tooth, related complication and management of SD were evaluated. Results: This study included 78 ST found in 54 patients. Males were affected more than females with a sex ratio of 1,25 : 1. Most cases were single (77,8 %), conical (51,3 %), and unerupted (52,5 %) ST. Most teeth were normally orientated (65,4 %), placed in a palatal/lingual-sagittal position (53,9 %), adjacent to the crown of permanent teeth (50.2 %). Treatment was surgical removal (n= 40) followed by orthodontics (13 of 40 extracted patients). It was considered that 14 patient had been under follow-up. Conclusion: Clinically, ST are able to cause different local disorders, including retention of the primary tooth, delayed eruption of the permanent tooth, ectopic eruptions, tooth displacements, follicular cysts and other alterations, requiring surgical or orthodontic intervention.Although the occurrence of ST are rare, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of this problem when conducting periodical examinations.
