مرکز منطقه ای اطلاع رساني علوم و فناوري - The Use of Kırşehir-Kaman Garnets as Abrasive Material in Natural Stone Sector

Abstract :

Marble production in Turkey has reached to high quantities at recent years and marble export income has left back boron income. This positive growing in the sector has increased the interest on the marble production. One of the most important factors affecting demand of marble in market is the polish quality and this achieved by grinding and polishing units in marble processing plants. High volume of abrasive consumption is the most important problem in the grinding and polishing applications. Abrasive materials used in these applications are mostly silicon carbide and a little diamond recently in use. In this study, usage of Kırsehir-Kaman garnet minerals as an abrasive material in grinding and polishing operations of calcite based marble was investigated. With this purpose, marble grinding and polishing stones were prepared by using the samples taken from the study area. They were tested on Afyon Grey marble in a marble processing plant in full scale. Finally, it is seen that Kırşehir-Kaman garnet minerals can be used as abrasive materials for these operations.
