The Dissolution Behavior of MgO-C Bricks in Electric Arc Furnace Steel Slags with Graded Magnesia Saturation
Abstract :
The dissolution behavior of slag-line MgO-C bricks installed in Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking vessels was studied with consideration on differing degrees of magnesia saturation. The nominal chemical composition of the orginal slag received from a domestic EAF facility was recorded as CaO=36.28 %, SiO2=16.26 %, Al2O3=9.82 %, Fe2O3 (t)=26.43 %, MnO=6.73 %, and MgO=3.33 % with minor presence of Cr2O3, TiO2, P2O5 and S. During present work this slag was modified in MgO content with gradual additions of calsine magnesia until saturation was achieved at 1600 □C according to the isothermal solubility diagram. The corrosion studies were made by melting slag in MgO-C ladles with induction furnaces. The results obtained in dissolution experiments were interpreted in terms of changes in slag composition and by microstructural and chemical variations observed in the bricks through SEM, EDX.
