RE-EVALUATING COMMUNITY INTERPRETING: EMERGENCY DISASTER INTERPRETING
Abstract :
This study aims at revisiting the sub-field of interpreting that covers the rendering of social services to those who need them, namely Community Interpreting (CI), under the light of the example set by Emergency and Disaster Interpreting (Afette Rehber Çevirmenlik/ARÇ) as a type emerging from Turkish experience and thus re-evaluating both the concept of CI and the specifying aspects of ARÇ as a sub-field of it. ARÇ refers to the interpreting services rendered for foreign search and rescue and relief teams that serve in a country within the frame of international disaster and emergency assistance. After giving an overview of the definitions and contexts of CI in the world and in Turkey and the place of ARÇ within that frame, the article attempts at providing an evaluation of the specificities and novelties that ARÇ might have brought to CI practices at its 13th year within the context of international emergency and disaster assistance processes by means of the data compiled from ARÇ practices.
