Genital Hygiene Behaviors of Female Prisoners

The aim of this descriptive study was to determine the genital hygiene behaviors of imprisoned womens. The study was carried out with 55 imprisoned women. Data were collected by using the Genital Hygiene Behaviors Inventory (GHBI). Women’ average score of GHBI was 86.6 ±10.6 (min:53-max:106). To the results: mass and print media were the main source of knowledge; thirty percent of women described vaginal leakage; the percentages of washing their hands before “going to toilet”, “sexual intercourse” and “changing ped” were found lower; one in three women did not take a shower during menstruation; more than half of the women described false method of genital hygiene after elimination. The average score of GHBI was found close to the desired range, some wrong genital hygiene behaviors were found too much to disdain. It was suggested that imprisoned women should be educated about the healthy genital hygiene behaviors.
