Abstract :
Purpose: This study was carried out to determine that an exploration of factors which effect mental health of caregivers of schizophrenia patients. Methods: This study is a descriptive study. The universe of study included caregivers of schizophrenia patients in the psychiatry outpatient clinics of two university hospitals and to an association schizophrenia patients and caregivers in İzmir. The purposive sampling method was used. The sample consisted of 103 caregivers. Data were collected with Socio-demographics questionnaire, Styles of Coping Inventory and General Health Questionnaire. Findings: In the study, it was found that 65% of the caregivers were at risk of mental health mortality. Factors associated with poor mental health were female gender (t=2.33, p=0.021), low education level (F=17.05, p= 0.001), not attended continuous training programs and using of emotion-focused coping methods (p= 0.001). Conclusions: Factors associated with mental health in the caregivers were gender, education level, employment status, participation in programs on schizophrenia and coping style. It is recommended to investigate other factors (express emotion, burden) influencing mental health of caregivers and to carry out programs to increase the mental wellness of the caregivers.
