Abstract
Irony, which is to mean opposite of what is said, is a narrative technique that is used in Turkish and World literature. Irony, which is among the most applied techniques of modern literature, was used commonly in classical literature. Adalet Ağaoğlu is among the authors that employs irony successfully in Turkish literature. Adalet Ağaoğlu makes criticism of the system through irony and satire. Adalet Ağaoğlu, who began novel and story writing in 12 March period when social realism debates took place most intensively, reacted against the perspective of engaged and populist literature. By structural innovations in her novel and stories, she criticizes engaged literature. It is in this respect that her works are distinct from the other works of 12 March period. Although her themes deal with the issues of the period and ideological subjects, esthetic worry is the most significant aspect of her writing. Adalet Ağaoğlu employs irony as a means of sarcastic and implicit narration during the psychological pressure of the period of revolution.
