Abstract :
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of School Garden Program (SGP) which is science based and interdisciplinary and developed within the scope of Free Activity Course (FAC) on some objectives of social studies program. In the study, equivalent control group quasi-experimental model was used. The sample of the study comprised in total 187 5th graders, studying at 6 different classes of “A” middle school, located in Trabzon city center in the 2010-2011 academic year. Control group comprises 93 students while experimental group comprises 94 students. Social Studies Academic Achievement Test (SSAAT) was used as a data source. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS 15.00 by using t-test, ANCOVA and two-way ANOVA. The results of the study showed that SGP increased the 5th graders’ academic achievements on the related objectives of social studies program. Also, this increasing was generally seen on boys and indifferent students to the course.
