LE MORPHEME “QUE” DANS LE FRANÇAIS PARLE AU CAMEROUN : UNE APPROCHE SOCIOLINGUISTIQUE

This paper sheds light on the use of the morpheme ‘Que’ in the French spoken in Cameroon, one of the world linguistic megadiversity or hotspot of linguistic diversity. The paper shows that beyond the deviation from the established norm, the use of the morpheme “Que” is a form of dialectisation or appropriation of the French language in Cameroon. The paper demonstrates that in Cameroon, speakers’ L1 features interferes with the French features, then produces a kind of construction which conveys a meaning different from what would have been expected by a native speaker of French. The language substrat, although generalisable in Cameroon, is mostly observed in the speech form of most speakers from the West Region of the country. In order to obtain these results, we have made use of participant observation and indirect interview.
