Abstract :
Tradition of nicknaming is a notable element of folklore in Turkish culture since Central Asian times. Nicknaming varies and is shaped in accordance with cultural characteristics, believes, values of each society within the frame of their traditions and certain practices. In Turkish culture, adding a nickname to real names is a frequently observed tradition. Nicknames are acquired names that identify people separately from their real name and reveal a distinct feature of them. Nicknames that are acquired and necessarily reveal a distinct feature of person assume a remarkable function as the easiest and most convenient way of introducing a person to others in a society. Different characteristics, socio-economic status, occupation, socio-cultural status, distinct physical features, behaviours and attitudes, ethnical origin or lineage, etc. of a person constitute an important factor when giving a nickname. This study adopts on-field compilation method and discusses the example of Bartın in nicknaming tradition. The compiled nicknames are studied once categorized by reason of naming. By doing so, we tried to reveal the still-alive tradition of nicknaming in Bartın.
