Abstract :
The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of dried molasses beet pulp on the chemical composition, some fermentation characteristics, total gas production, organic matter digestibility andmetabolisable energy of alfalfa silage. The alfalfa hay harvested at flowering stage was ensiled withdried molasses beet pulp at the rates of 0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0% in triplicate in small experiment siloshaving a capacity of 3 kg. Dried molasses beet pulp had a significant effect on the chemicalcomposition, some fermentation characteristics, organic matter digestibility and metabolisable energy of the resultant alfalfa silage. Dried molasses beet pulp increased dry matter content, Fleig score, total gasproduction, organic matter digestibility and metabolisable energy of alfalfa whereas it reduced crudeash, crude protein, acid detergent fiber, ammonia content and pH of alfalfa silage. The dry matter andcrude protein contents of the resultant alfalfa silages ranged from 21.21 to 26.30%, and 17.13 to14.84%, respectively. The pH and Fleig Score (FS) of resultant alfalfa silages ranged from 4.72 to 5.62 and 22.35 to 68.80, respectively. In addition, the ammonia contents of alfalfa silages ranged from 13.50 to 27.38% of the total nitrogen. As a conclusion, 6% of dried molasses beet pulp can be included into alfalfa forage on fresh basis to obtain high quality alfalfa silage.
