Professional Problems Experienced by Information Technology (IT) Teachers and Suggested Solutions
Abstract :
This study was carried out using the qualitative research method, to determine the professional problems experienced by IT teachers and to put forward related solutions. The study was conducted with 10 school directors and 10 IT teachers from elementary schools in the city of Eskisehir in the academic year of 2010-2011. The data were collected with the semi-structured interview method and were analyzed and interpreted via content analysis. As a result of the research process, the professional problems experienced by IT teachers were gathered under five themes such as personal rights, job definition, professional development, professional satisfaction and administrative support. The solutions to the problems suggested by the participants were as follows: appointing IT teachers as IT teacher trainers, determining the working hours and job definitions, raising school directors’ awareness of the roles of IT teachers, IT teachers’ keeping up with the educational technologies, training other teachers on technology use. Additionally the school directors and the IT teachers believe that FATIH project will be effective in solving the professional problems experienced by IT teachers. In this context, the participants considered the role of IT teachers in the FATIH project as providing teachers with support and training regarding technology use.
