Abstract :
Our country remains below the average in PISA, PIRLS (2001) and TIMSS examinations targeting to measure reading skills, literacy and field skills at international platform. This case is directly proportional with training of individuals who have not reading skill. Reading is a process containing readability, intelligibility and legibility concepts. While it is known that history of studies related with legibility which is an important pillar of reading does not date too back, its shortness is an unquestionable fact. Although studies have been conducted with readability formulas which are tried to make suitable for structure of Turkish, it is difficult to say that desired result is fully achieved. This study was conducted for the purpose of establishing readability levels of texts in 2nd class Turkish textbook. In the study, readability levels of narrative and informative texts in 2nd class Turkish textbook belonging to Doku Publications which is taught in 2014-2015 education-training year were measured, poems were excluded. In the analysis of texts, readability formula of Ateşman (1997) adapted into Turkish was used. According to the result of the research, it was determined that readability scores of narrative texts are higher than readability scores of informative texts.
