  • Abstract
Concrete used in essential facilities needs designing in such a way that it won’t be damaged by external factors in time. The extent of damage from external factors can only be understood after the initial experiments. Generally, designing concrete in terms of external factors is done according to two factors. To what extent limitations such as maximum water/cement level in concrete and minimum cement dosage can occur depends on the kind of concrete aggregate, gradation and its convenience to standards. In the study, highly durable concrete was produced by using barite aggregate and mineral-chemical additives. In addition to the physical and mechanical properties, the durability of the concrete was analyzed. In terms of durability, the strength of heavy concrete was improved against sulphate effects, which the concrete was considered to encounter during its service time. Compression durability variations, chemical and micro structure variations of the concrete, exposed to sulphate effects, were analyzed. As a result of the research conducted in the context of the study, some decline was observed in the durability of heavy concrete with high compression durability against sulphate compression. Magnesium sulphate effect was concluded to have a more destructive property. Although, in terms of ratio, concrete with barite aggregate was affected most from sulphate effect, it remained as the concrete with the highest compression durability in terms of quantity.
