An Investigation and a Course Proposal on the Necessity of Social Design in Visual Communication Design Education
Abstract :
The aim of this research is to determine the necessity of social design in the field of visual communication design education and the purpose and the function of social design within visual communication design education. In this research, the quantitative data were collected through a survey to specify social design education practices, problems, and needs in the classes of the instructors participating to the study as well as their opinions and suggestions about the development of teaching-learning process of social design. For the qualitative aspect of the research, interviews were used to gather information from experts in the field. 270 instructors working at 35 universities in the Faculty of Fine Arts in Turkey participated in this research. In another phase of the research semi-structured interviews with 10 experts were carried out. The majority of the instructors emphasized that social design needs to take place as a separate course (elective) in Graphic Design Programs. In the light of the findings, a new social design course has been proposed.
