Abstract :
Objective: In all stages of medical service, providing patient safety and preventing medicationerrors are among the priorities of healthcare system. From this regard, it is quite important todetermine workers medication error tendencies and take necessary precautions. The study wascarried out to investigate nurses medication error tendencies and factors effecting.Methods: The study was designed as descriptive and cross-sectional and study population wascomposed of two hospitals affiliated to the Ministry of Health. Study sample included all the nurseswho agreed to participate in the study except for those working in operating room, hemodialysis,chemotherapy, polyclinics and diagnosis units. The number of available nurses was 263 and theresponse rate was 63%. In data collection, the questionnaire form of sociodemographic andworking characteristics of nurses and Medical Error Tendency Scale in Nursing. Data wereevaluated by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis analysis.Results: Nurses error tendencies were found low in the subdimensions of drug and transfusionadministration, hospital infections, patient follow-up and material safety, falling events andcommunication. Statistically significant differences were detected between medication errortendencies in patient follow-up and material safety sub-dimension in terms of institution, drug andtransfusion applications sub-dimension in terms of marital status, all sub-dimensions in terms ofwork shift and falling sub-dimension in terms of weekly working hours.Conclusion: It was concluded that nurses medical error tendencies was low and that theinstitution, working shift and weekly working hours influenced the tendency for medical errors. It isrecommended that managers evaluate organizational and reporting culture, revise workingconditions and make necessary improvements.
