Abstract :
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of individual counselling intervention based on the stage of change for increasing physical activity in adults.Material and Method: Our research was performed as a randomized, controlled trial. The sample of this study formed 84 administrative staff working at the Mug/a University, age ranged from 23 to 50 years. The participants were divided into two groups as intervention (n=42) and control groups (n=42). However, a participant in the research process from both groups went to. Research was completed with 82 participants. The intervention group received physical activity counselling program (five counselling interviews). Data were obtained in the period between September 2005-Apri/ 2006. Sociodemogrophic Questions, Physical activity scale, physical activity behaviour form and assessment of stage of change form were used in the study. The data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 7 7 .0.Results: At the end of the physical activity counselling program the scores for physical activity intention and physical activity behavior (before-after) were found to be significantly increase in the intervention group (p O.OS). When the final interview results between the two groups were compared, the results were significantly different in favour of the intervention group (p O.OS). 82.93% of participants in the intervention group and 27.95% of participants in the control group expressed improvement in stages of behavioral change and these changes (initial- final interview) were also significantly different between the groups (p O.OS).Conclusions: It was concluded that individualized counselling intervention based on the stage of change was effective and useful to increase thephysical activity among adults.
