Abstract :
The archetypes of art begin to appear towards the middle of Palaeolithic Age. The most important one of these images, in terms of art, is perhaps “the mother image”. The mother image is one of the archetypes of belief as well as of art. That is, the archetypes of art and belief come from the same origin. The evidences of visual thoughts related to mother image is based on mythological documents and archaeological findings. The mother image is a statement of moral comprehension different from the instruments by which human developed to meet his daily needs. This statement pioneered the development of human’s art thought in his life adventure. The mother goddess image that was the art image of Neolithic Age has increasingly become abstract by reshaping together with developing the agriculture. The sculptures that were described as mother goddess have also been reduced to twodimensional appearance by eluding their three-dimensional appearances. From the late Neolithic Age and early Bronze Age, it has been understood that societies has headed towards more organized community structures depending on developing agriculture. The mother image becomes authoritarian and objective in parallel with these social developments. The mother goddess image turns into a form that carries the symbols of agricultural fertile but her fertility stay in background and in which her face and body were described in detail towards Ancient period. That kind of portrayal understanding turned from human-god to an understanding that described human. The tradition of mother goddess eventually conveyed her role to a masculine god. The mother image as a source of art has undergone a lot of changes but has never vanished from its emergence to today. It is always possible to see the signs of this rooted art tradition in our life as concrete realities.
