In this study, the musical life of the Turks is discussed. Because of their nomadic life style in the past they were in close contact with many cultures. The results of this cultural contact is naturally reflected in their music. Turkish music can be examined under three main topics. 1- Folk Music, 2- Traditional Music, 3- Contemporary Turkish Music. Turkish folk music has roots in the traditions of Central Asia. In this context, it can be said that Turkish folk music is an extension of Central Asian traditions.Traditional Turkish Art Music is a synthesis of Ottoman culture, local cultures of Anatolia and Arabic and Persian cultures. Traditional Turkish Art music uses the (makam) based system. Makam: (a melodic course of a series of unique modal structures). Among the main instruments are (drum), (oud), (kanun), (nay), and (kudum). For Contemporary Turkish music, comprehensive formalization towards European music began under the leadership of Ataturk in 1923 with the establishment of modern Turkey. Cemal Resit Rey (1904-1985), Hasan Ferit Alnar (1906-1978), Ulvi Cemal Erkin (1906-1978), Ahmet Adnan Saygun (1907-1991) and Necil Akses Kazim (1908-1999), were educated in Europe and became the first generation of Turkish composers.
