The Some Spermatological Characteristics in Norduz Ram Lambs and its Change Based on Age

This study aimed to detect the changes in the sperm output and characteristics in Norduz ram lambs (variety of Akkaraman) based on age. Sperm collection was initiated when the ram lambs were average 275 old-days age. For this aim, 23 head of ram lambs were accustomed to artificial vagina for 5-6 weeks. Sperm was collected from 275 - 365 old-days ram lambs and bi-weekly from 379 - 463 days old ram lambs for sperm output and characteristics. The least squares means for sperm volume, sperm motility, concentration of spermatozoa and abnormal spermatozoa ratio in ram lambs were detected as 0.67±0.05 ml, 78.7±3.96 %, 4.52±0.34 (10^9/ml) and 29.74±1.70 %, respectively. The basic values for mass motility and sperm viscosity were 3.83±0.06, 3.53±0.06. In single and twin ram lambs sperm volume (ml), sperm motility (%), mass motility (0-5), sperm viscosity (0-5), sperm concentration (10^9/ml), and abnormal spermatozoit ratio (%) were found as 0.73±0.02, 0.63±0.03; 76.96±1.72 80.70±2.47; 3.85±0.09 3.79±0.05; 3.49±0.08 3.60±0.06; 4.74±0.14 4.44±0.20; 30.68±0.73 28.20±1.03, respectively. Similarly, in ram lambs born from 3, 4, 5 old-years age of dam sperm volume (ml), sperm motility (%), mass motility (0–5), sperm viscosity (0–5), concentration of spermatozoa (10^9/ml), and abnormal spermatozoa ratio (%) were 0.71±0.04, 0.63±0.02, 0.70±.03; 80.96±3.56 73.56±1.61 81.97±2.47; 3.96±0.14, 3.69±0.09 4.08±0.08; 3.55±0.13 3.41±0.08 3.81±0.08; 4.62±0.29, 4.15±0.13, 5.01±0.20, and 29.38±1.50, 30.18±0.68, 28.76±1.03, respectively. The effects of the environmental factors which are live weight, age periods, age of dam and type of birth on sperm output varied based on sperm characteristics.
