Abstract
Turkey is in an unstable development process in urbanization terms. Despite these differences, urbanization and the urban popolation levels in Turkey, are increasing day by day. At this study it is aimed at exerting present urbanization of Rize, which is a port and trade center the history of which goes to ancient times. The urbanization level of the city will be examined with demographic, economical and socio-cultural aspects. Moreover, put forward to the characteristics of the settlement of the city and their affects on its urbanization is necessary fo understanding and evaluating the present urbanization period of Rize. In general Rize has holding the same urbanization problems which Turkey holds. Even its urbanization level is under the average urbanization level of Turkey, the ratio of urban population level of the city increases rapidly. The ratio of the population employed in agriculture permanently decreases in favour of the population employed in service sector. The location which city constructed are causing to negative and costly problems on urbanization.
