Abstract :
Group research as one of the cooperative teaching methods is one of the ways to share the duties and responsibilities on the basis of certain goals, and to enhance the interaction and academic achievement among students. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of group research in teaching of punctuation rules in language skills on students’ achievement and their learning retention. In the study, experimental design with control group was used based on measurements of pre-test and pos-test. Research working group is composed of 50 freshmen who took Turkish Language course at School of Health, Nursery Department at Artvin Coruh University. Language knowledge achievement test with 25 questions was conducted to the students as pre-test. The scores that students took from the test were analyzed by means of Mann Whitney U and Z analysis as one of nonparametric statistical methods. In the findings obtained, there seemed no significant differences (U= 279.00) between pre-test mean scores of experimental and control groups at the level of p 0.05 However, between the post-test mean scores, a significant difference (U=23.50) in favor of the experimental group was found at the level of p 0.05. These results show that group research has a positive effect on students’ achievement.
