Title Of Article :
ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT STRUCTURE AND TEACHING IT
Abstract :
Argumentative text is a kind of text by which a writer supports his claims that he puts forward about a subject with its data by using the ways of improving thinking and tries to refute the opposite claims and connects the subject to an end with them. The purpose of this study is to reveal the argumentative text structure which was developed by the researchers by benefiting from the related literature and to show how to benefit from this structure in teaching writing. In the study, argumentative text elements were handled at two different parts which were the main and auxiliary elements. The main elements were determined as ‘data’, ‘claim’, ‘opposite claim’ and ‘result’. The auxiliary elements were determined as ‘support reason’ and ‘refuting reason’. Besides, it was put emphasis on ‘’unnecessary repetition’’ and ‘’irrelevant unit’’ which were not functional as text units in argumentative text. In the study, after the argumentative text elements were showed on a sample text, it was explained stage by stage how to teach the argumentative text structure to primary students. The students, who have learnt the argumentative text structure, can take advantage of understanding and evaluating from the point of view of critical thinking the written and verbal arguments they have often encountered in their lives. Also it is thought that teachers and course book writers can benefit from this structure in teaching writing.
