METAPHORS USED BY PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO DESCRIBE “SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY LESSON” AND “SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TEACHER”
Abstract :
This study aims to analyze the perceptions of primary school students regarding the concepts of “science and technology lesson ” and “science and technology teacher ”, via metaphor. This research is a quality methods including survey models. The sample of this study is composed of 137 primary school students in grades 4.5.6.7 and 8 in Nevşehir. The data for the study were gathered by having the students complete the sentences “science and technology lesson is like . . . Because . . . ” And “science and technology teacher is like . . . Because . . . ” . The data gathered were analyzed using content analysis techniques and interpreted. This research is a quality methods including survey models. It was found that 19.7% of the primary school students who have participated in the study perceive “science and technology lesson” as “containing different areas of study”, 16.78 % “as inforaned” and 1.45% “as enlightening reflecting”. In addition 22.62% primary school students science and technology teacher as “transfering the knowledge”, 22.62 %“as provide the knowledge”, 18.24% “as knowledgeable in all areas ”, 2.91% “as a shoper”, 1.45% “as important and use full”. This study tried to find out the cognitive images that the primary school students have towards the concepts “Science and technology course” and “Science and technology teacher” through metaphors. Considering the number of the metaphors. while 137 primary school students provided metaphors about “Science and technology course”, they wrote 70 metaphors about “Science and Technology teacher”. In average, every two students created one different metaphor for these two concepts. This ratio shows that the children at this age have high level of abilities of imagination and the use of metaphors.
