EFFECT OF INQUIRY BASED LEARNING APPROACHES ON UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS IN GENERAL PHYSICS LABORATORY COURSE
Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of inquiry based approaches on first grade students’ physic achievement and science process skills in department of science education. Research was carried out in the General Physics Lab-I course in the department of science education at the faculty of Education in a state University in the fall term of 2010-2011. There are 102 first grade university students at the department of science education. Students were randomly assigned to four groups. The first group has 25 students and open inquiry based learning method was used at this group. Guided inquiry based learning method was used at the courses with 25 students in the second group, constructed inquiry method the third group with 26 students and the demonstration method at the fourth group with 26 students were used during the courses. Physic Achievement Test and Science Process Skills Test were used as a pre-posttest. Analysis of result showed that open inquiry and guided inquiry approaches increase students’ physic achievement better than the other approaches. Also open inquiry approach developed students’ science process skills better than the other approaches.
