مرکز منطقه ای اطلاع رساني علوم و فناوري - A THEORETICAL REVIEW ON FUNCTIONS OF NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATONS IN THE TOURISM SYSTEM

Abstract :

Non-Governmental Organizations operate in many fields within in the framework of ideals which they determined. Tourism has become a global phenomenon because of both the number people involved in tourism activities and its economic size. Therefore, not dealing with tourism or topics related the tourism cannot be expected from non-governmental organizations. Number of non-governmental organizations operating in tourism field is rising every year. Within nature of theoretical review, in this study, functions of non-governmental organization in tourism system were analysed with regard to tourism policy and planning, tourism marketing, sustainable tourism development and tourism researches and education. Main function of NGO’s in terms of tourism policy and planning is reinforcing resident participation in tourism planning process. In terms of tourism NGOs assist in destination promotion campaigns. It was also found in the study that NGOs play significant roles in tourism education and research. In the conclusion of the study, several recommendations for public authorities and tourism businesses have been introduced.
