Abstract :
This article explains a new paradigm in networking called cross-layer design (CLD), which differs fromconventional layered protocol architecture. With CLD, parameters of one layer can be used in optimization of another layer, and interactions among layers are permitted. Two examples of CLD approaches used in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETS) are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of CLD. The first example is using the energy level and consumption parameters depended on transmission range (Physical layer) in the packet routing (Network layer). The second example is including link stability information in network routing. Even though CLD offers benefits, there are challenges as well. These challenges are outlined here.
