Abstract :
Giving priority in the manufacturing industry to the production, product quality and costs at present situation in Turkey led recovery applications to be postponed to the second stage. However, utilization of natural resources efficiently by minimizing the consumption of materials and recovering qualified wastes is a very substantial topic to be considered. Conversion of waste foundry sand (WFS) generated from foundries and arising in high amounts in casting process to the economically valuable beneficial products with environmentally friendly methods instead of disposal as waste is one of the hot topics of developed countries working on it. However, studies on recovery applications of WFS in our country is inadequate yet; WFS are mostly disposed at landfills at present situation. Increasing landfill costs and limited landfill areas especially in the municipalities become a considerable matter for the foundry industry. Therefore, recovery of WFS instead of disposal will provide important savings both in production costs and disposal costs via the minimization of waste amounts. Preventing rapid consumption of natural resources, conversion of wastes to the input for economy instead of being a threat against environment and human health and finding them a place as energy purpose and as valuable chemical raw materials are the necessities according to the concept of sustainable environment and sustainable development, which is embraced as preferential policy target in world and as in our country. Thus, in this study, probable recovery applications for WFS which owns a substantial potential in Turkey are investigated and compiled in national and international basis.
