Abstract
The objective of this study is to compare and document pros and cons of FPGA (Field Programmable GateArrays) chips, designed as microcontrollers, against Si-based conventional microcontroller chips. FPGA chipshave become extremely popular in recent years and sometimes have been referred to as “chameleon” due totheir flexibility and compatibility in various applications. The comparison has been conducted under fivedifferent qualities of microcontrollers: performance and functionality, cost, programmability, powermanagement/consumption, and multilateral flexibility. In the course of this study, no specific brand or modelis referenced.
